RICK PASTOR AND FRED THOMPSON VICTORS IN THE HILLS
The club has an unwritten rule that states..."Go ahead and build as big of an engine as you choose, JUST TRY AND GET IT TO HOOK UP !! Well, that theory was proven at Hill Valley where Rick Pastor won the modified segment with a 235 Chevy 6-cylinder under a 30 Ford Sedan, passing the V-8 boys, he claimed the car got better towards the end of the 15 lap feature. Larry Felty finished second after leading the first 2/3 of the race, Paul Bacchus finished third in a Gremlin loaned from Rick Pastor.
"Fast Freddie" Thompson drove another flawless race in the sportsman segment and is well on his way to another championship season, followed by Robert Williams a Petty blue mopar #43. Ed Cutshall's 39 Chevy coupe exploded early in the feature ending his night . Hill Valley Speedway Finish July 10th: 1. Rick Pastor; 2. Larry Felty; 3. Paul Bacchus; 4. Fred Thompson; 5. Robert Williams; 6. Ed Cutshall. Larry Felty won the heat.
BARTHOLOMEW AND BACCHUS SCORE BOBBY GERHART MEMORIAL LAURELS
We are very proud to say our car count is growing as we have gained about 5 new cars at Susky and had sixteen cars registered to race the Bobby Gerhart Memorial. We have also had two rainout shows so it was good to get out on the track.
Clarke Bartholomew won the sportsman segment in his maiden voyage after working hard for the last two plus years building his coupe. The "crown 7" moved past Fred Thompson on a late restart to score the win. Third place went to Wild Willie Brymesser.
Paul Bacchus won with a borrowed car from Rick & Nancy Pastor with Fred Krickbaum making a late charge to get by third place Larry Felty and almost getting by Bacchus with two laps to go. Paul Hoffman driving his 35 Chevy sedan worked his way to fourth followed by Stew Wenrich, fifth. Rick Pastor brought out a 30 Chevy sedan powered by a 235 -6cylinder modified and was a solid sixth. Arlin Brougher ran seventh and Bruce Young brought out his 77 Gremlin modified just as it was raced almost 30 years ago. Shawn Yoder is pulling his hair out trying to get the #66 30X90 to quit cutting out, and Glenn Pobletts had some mechanical woes in his 34 Pontiac coupe. Bad racin luck haunts Alan Pahulick driving his immaculate 79 New York style Gremlin, and Aaron Brommer also experienced some tuff times in his Pinto modified. Gary Felty had motor problems in his maiden voyage. Gary Becker's 37 Chevy coupe had some handling problems.
Just a reminder: The EMMR will remember Robert Wright at the Convention, Aug 13 - 15, as Bob was a long time Pennmar member and would be a tribute if as many Pennmar cars were present for Saturday.
Also, President Felty would like as many cars as possible at the Lebanon Veterans Affairs Medical Center for a race car show from 10 - 2 on August 1. Robert Black would like an idea of how many to prepare for so call (717)- 507-8907 or tessnbob@comcast.net Susquehanna Speedway Finish July 3rd: 1. Paul Bacchus; 2. Fred Krickbaum; 3. Larry Felty; 4. Hesston Speedway Finish June 26th: THE FRED AND FRED SHOW AT HESSTON
Fred Thompson of nearby Cherrytown, Pa. piloted his 36 Pontiac coupe to victory in the sportsman segment of our feature at Hesston Speedway. We thank the management of this reborn facility and the efforts of Fred and second place finisher Ed Cutshall for securing 2 dates this season. Fred has been known to work on the heavy equipment that prepares Hesston and no doubt is his favorite track. Robert Goss finished third driving a 51-52 Chevy fenderless modified.
The other Fred, from Pasadena, Md., Fred Krickbaum driving his 37 Ford coupe/Olsen modified started on the outside and walked away, unchallenged from second place Larry Felty in his Super Sportsman followed by Stew Wenrich driving his Tobias Mustang. Lloyd Hockenberry's Gremlin and Paul Bacchus' 40 Chevy were put on the trailer due to mechanical woes. Don't miss the next race here, the track is fast.
Amanda Coghill set the lineup, Fred Thompson sponsored the trophies, and Larry Felty won the heat.
1. #75 Fred Krickbaum, 2. #46 Larry Felty, 3. #911F Fred Thompson,
4. #1 Stew Wenrich, 5. #88 Ed Cutshall, 6. #56 Robert Goss.
DNS - #33 Lloyd Hockenberry, #7a Paul Bacchus Potomac Speedway Finish June 11th:
1. Paul Bacchus, 2. Fred Krickbaum, 3. Glenn Pobletts, 4. Stew Wenrich, 5. Rick Pastor, 6. Larry Felty, 7. Gary Becker, 8. Paul Hoffman, DNS: Dale Smith. POTOMAC...........A HUGE SUCCESS
As we ventured to southern Maryland's POTOMAC SPEEDWAY, the club can say with out a doubt, that this race was one of the most eventful battles and best racing in a long while. We thank the management of POTOMAC and applaud the efforts and trophy sponsorship of Fred Krickbaum who worked very hard to secure the event.
Mark Williams, a guest from the Delaware vintage club, took the lead for the first five laps after starting third, with an immaculate late 30's coach body on a late model chassis and was super fast. Bacchus and Krickbaum worked hard to run down Williams, as Bacchus went into the lead with an outside move on lap six. Krickbaum made it past Williams and Bacchus on the outside only to find his car the wrong way on the track. The three were three wide several times. Williams retired with two laps to go, which moved Ronald Ford, our other guest from Delaware Vintage, from the back to second in a Gremlin. Fred Krickbaum salvaged third coming from the rear. Larry Felty, fourth, Stew Wenrich fifth, Rick Pastor sixth, and Glenn Pobletts seventh, battled and changed positions each and every lap. Gay Becker finished eighth in his Mopar powered #00 coupe. Mark Williams settled for ninth, and tenth was the maiden voyage of Paul Hoffman's mid 30's Mopar coach on a "Kricknell" chassis (thats part Bicknell and a lot of Krickbaum's welding) in bare metal and looking mean. Eleventh went to Dale Smith in John McGarvey's Plymouth coupe.
I can almost bet that Pee Wee Pobletts and the car his son Glenn drives, raced here in the 60's and 70's with the Pontiac sponsorship from Towson, Md.
Amanda Coghill handled the lineup
Words have been said that we may return next year. We certainly hope so. FELTY, BRYMESSER, & POBLETTS ON THE PODIUM AT SUSQUEHANNA OPENER
No, your not reading an article from the 50's, 60's, or 70's, as the names are synonymous with the tri-state area's history of racing, thus, the sons of the above great racers have carried out and continued their fathers legacy's in racing, some primarily in the exact cars as raced yesteryear.
Larry Felty of Jonestown, Pa., ran the perfect modified race, running down the 40 Chevy coupe of Paul Bacchus, Felty took the lead on lap 10 and never looked back in his Super Sportsman. Bacchus settled for second. Glenn Pobletts of Hanover piloted his father's 34 Pontiac coupe just as Pee Wee Pobletts campaigned the car a quarter century ago to many victories, Glenn finished a strong third. Stew Wenrich of Sinking Springs raced his way to forth in a Toby Tobias Mustang tribute modified. Rick Pastor of Thurmont Md. Still working some bugs driving a New York Gremlin modified struggled fifth. Past Champion, Fred Krickbaum of Pasadena, Md. had mechanical woes as he and Paul Hoffman wrenched feverishly on the 37 Ford coupe. Gary Becker of Hanover brought out his outstanding Mopar powered coupe fell victim and Shawn Yoder had ignition problems sidelining both.
Wild Willie Brymesser bagged the Sportsman segment in his 37 Ford coupe...Heats to Bacchus, Brymesser.
Amanda Coghill flipped the coin and set the field.
